These makers share an interest in depicting a nuanced and multi-faceted exploration of how industrial collapse impacts a specific community. 　　Doing so, through a blend of evocative imagery, personal testimonies, and archival footage, the film explores the physical and psychological landscapes that are affected by closures. It uncovers how the hollowed-out spaces and the collective memory of a community deal with their past while trying to imagine a future. The essayistic features of the film show in its engagement with complex societal issues beyond a simple narrative. It questions rather than explains the matter at hand and thereby reflects on the human condition. We are invited to critically consider the long-term consequences of economic shifts.

Karl was a ship hand, who has decided to return to his hometown of Hamburg. There on the night of the yearly beer festival, he meets Margit, who tells him she has left her family home in search of freedom. They spend the night in a hotel, and fall in love.
